So here we are again. We talking about calories?

Do calories even matter?

Yuss– because they’re everywhere, man. In that egg. In that mocha frappuccino.
Even in that extra piece of cake that’s sitting in the fridge.

Calories are in the things we eat, so of course they matter. They matter for your health, for your energy levels, and for your physique goals.

They matter.

If you ever hear someone telling you they don’t, politely stand up, and RUN for the nearest exit. Parachute your butt to safety!

Why should I care about calories?

Because if you want to take control of the changes you can make in your body, calories can be one of the biggest drivers to push that change. We get skinny because of calories we eat. We get fat because of the calories we eat. If you are going to make a physique change, it’s going to ride the back of your relationship with food and the calories that are in them.

So how do me and calories change our relationship?

You learn and your knowledge about them grows. Ignorance can be bliss, but not when it comes to calories. You may think you are doing well when you choose that Southwest Chile salad (670 calories) over the Big Mac ( 563 calories), only to find out that you ended up with eating more calories wise.

Now, the overall health impact is still in the salads favor, but here we are talking calories. It’s always better to know the calories instead of guessing what you THINK is lower!

So how do I learn about calories?

Great question! Luckily for you, there’s an easy answer: you keep track of them. Starting out, it’s best to track everything you eat. If you plan on putting it in your mouth, then it should be tracked. My suggestion would be to use an app like MyFitnessPal or Mike’s Macros (a more accurate version).

Got it. Track. What do I do with these numbers?

Set a goal. Fat loss. We will need to be in a calorie deficit. Muscle gain. You will need to be in a calorie surplus. Set a goal and be prepared to stick with it for the long haul.

So I’m tracking and have a goal, now what?

Start learning. See what’s in the foods you eat everyday. We all have are “normal” meals. Start keeping up with that and see where it’s getting you day in day out. If you notice that one of your meals is taking up too many of your daily calories for your desired goal, it may be time to find something to substitute in for that meal.

Great, I’m starting to learn and even make small changes. Shouldn’t I be doing MORE?

Nope.

It is really this simple. The hard part is sticking with this. It’s not sexy and it’s not speedy. BUT if you can be honest with yourself– and stay consistent– it will work!

Calories (along with a sick exercise route) are the end all be all to your fat loss or muscle building goals. If you ignore them, you are literally removing your legs before the race even starts.

Let’s start paying attention to those calories today and start building the better you of tomorrow.
